Even my mate who is a die-hard souls fan and has beaten them all multiple times and even he said DS2 was better than 1except for somethings he thought DS1 did better, especially in regard to scholar because the devs actually listened to the complains and build a new experience on top of it. I'll give the game this, the story and world are better than DS2 but after I have gone back to ds2 my god does it just control and feel so much better than 1, I honestly don't understand the hate for it at this point, gameplay-wise it just seems superior in every way. He said something along the lines of "Dark souls is a game with amazing storytellers (world design and lore) but lazy/bad gameplay designers"
I think my friend put it best when I was laughing at some of the remasters textures and design choices. Other things attributed to this but as I went through the game it just became a slog more than anything, not the fun die and learn then die until I beat the boss, I didn't feel accomplished when I killed something only thankful I could finally move on, unlike the others where I was happy I beat them. It took me and my mate like I wanna say six months to a year to beat DS1 because I didn't have the drive to play it because to me it just was not fun, the controls veered into this heavily for me because they just seem janky and not very good along with some enemies having weird things about them like attacks locking on mid-way through an attack animation, like a guy would jump attack and I would dodge only for him to turn mid-air which in other souls games I'm not aware this happens. So me and my friend decided to play through the DS games, the only ones I'd played through before at this point were DS2SotFS and Bloodborne, beat BB a few times and I really like it, same with DS2 but only the once.
